Free Services

The Freedom House Detroit Model

Starting with legal aid and shelter, Freedom House Detroit delivers a continuum of free services to indigent asylum seekers that guides them toward asylum, helps them heal from the traumas of persecution, and teaches them the skills they need to be self-sufficient in the U.S.

Why Our Model Is Critical

After they make it to the U.S., the biggest hurdle asylum seekers face is finding a service provider that offers shelter and legal aid. Without both, asylum seekers face the ongoing threats of deportation and exploitation.

At Freedom House Detroit, we provide free comprehensive services that treat the whole individual to help restore dignity and stability:

Legal Aid
Shelter & Food
Medical and Mental Health Care
English as a Second Language Training
Job Readiness Training
Acculturation
Offsite Housing
Transportation

Our experienced legal team works inside the House, reducing the barriers to the legal process and minimizing travel risks.  Our social services team practices person-centered, trauma-informed care and works with our partners to coordinate psychological care and medical treatment. Then, we go even further, providing classes and workshops that teach clients about U.S. business, financial, and housing systems, so clients gain the skills necessary to be successful and independent in the U.S.
